It’s one of the most enjoyable SUVs to drive in the market because of its remarkable cornering skills, and it also delivers a pleasant ride. The Mazda has more basic safety features than the Kia, as well as finer inside materials. Seating

Fuel Economy

The CVT automatic-equipped Soul gets 30 MPG combined (27 cities and 33 highways), which is somewhat better than most competitors. However, we were unable to reproduce these results in real life. We averaged 26.8 MPG over 350 miles (100 of which were on the interstate at a respectable speed).

Value

Even for a small SUV, the Brown Kia Soul is reasonably priced. Though there isn’t a lot of soft-touch plastic, it doesn’t feel cheap. The imitation leather on the door rest where you lay your elbow feels lovely, as does the leather-wrapped steering wheel. There’s also a lot of silver trim to break up the monotony of the all-black interior. Kia’s warranty is, as usual, class-leading.

Wildcard

The continuously variable automatic gearbox isn’t particularly enjoyable to operate, but it’s well-tuned and somewhat quicker than comparable CVT automatics. Hence, there’s also not much power on board; upgrade to the Turbo for a more powerful engine. Even the midtier Soul is enjoyable to drive around curves and has a decent ride.

Therefore, the Soul makes the most of its boxy design by offering plenty of cabin and cargo space. The style is unique and undeniable. The premium audio system even includes beat-synced speaker lights, which adds to the entertainment value.

Storage & Technology

The Soul features deeper luggage well than comparable compact SUVs, giving it extra storage space. Though the space is excellent (24.2 cubic feet), there is a big hump at the base of the back seats when folded, limiting usability.

Hence, storage capacity is adequate for the class, with plenty of bins and compartments for front-row passengers. Despite the spacious rear seat, installing a car seat is difficult since the anchors are inserted deeply and access to the tethers is restricted by this trim’s non-adjustable headrests.

Comfort

Even after hours of sitting, the front chairs are pretty comfy. The angle of the rear seat back is fixed, although it is set at a comfortable angle. The ride is controlled and solid, but never unpleasant. Unlike other competitors, the Soul does not shiver as though it is collapsing when driven over larger bumps. At highway speeds, the upright windshield provides a noticeable—but not annoying—degree of wind noise, as well as some tire noise. Because of the simulated gearshifts, the engine does not drone at full power like some CVT automatics.

Due to its upright design, the Soul’s cabin is spacious, making space for several passengers and their belongings. The Venue only has enough space for four passengers in the rear, yet it can accommodate seventeen if the seats are folded down.

Performance

The 2.0-liter engine’s maximum acceleration is a tad lacking. However, the Soul feels suitably nimble around town. The steering is natural, and the cornering skills exceed expectations. In most situations, the CVT transmission feels like a standard automatic. The Soul achieved a 0-60 mph pace of 8.8 seconds in Edmund’s track testing, which is a good time for a small SUV. Although the steering has a modest effort that gradually increases as you travel away from the center. The Soul’s handling skills are comparable to those of sportier rivals such as the Mazda CX-3 and Mini Countryman. While, the only real drawback is the sensitive brake pedal, which takes some getting accustomed to. Because the brake reaction is too rapid, you must be smooth on the brakes to avoid lurching. However, the Soul, unlike several other subcompacts, does not have all-wheel drive.

Details

The base Soul comes with a four-cylinder engine producing 147 horsepower, but Kia also supplies a powerful supercharged four producing 201 horsepower. Because of this need, the boxy shape provides enough room for four passengers and a large storage area for their stuff. Forget about getting a Soul if you need all-wheel drive; it’s not available on this model. In addition, it does not include any of the common safety measures seen in modern vehicles.

Overall, the 2022 Kia Soul performs admirably. The original engine could use a little more power, but the upgraded turbocharged engine has a little more zip. This small crossover provides a comfortable ride and gets average gas mileage for the class, but it’s not as spry as some rivals.

The fundamental engine will get you where you need to go, but not with much enthusiasm. You’ll want the upgraded engine for faster acceleration. It is, however, only available in the top-tier Turbo trim. The CVT is quick and functions similarly to a typical automatic transmission.

Handling and Braking

The ride quality of the Soul is mainly smooth, although the slightly stiff suspension of this Kia results in a jittery ride over bumps on the road. While the Soul is agile, cars such as the Mazda CX-30 are more sporty. All-wheel drive is not an option.
