Comfort

Even on extended trips, the front seats are supportive, and the optional second-row captain’s chairs are almost as relaxing as the front ones. Unfortunately, the Highlander has a serious flaw in its third-row seating. These chairs are not suitable for adults due to their lack of cushioning, extremely low seat cushions, and cramped quarters.

At motorway speeds, both wind and road noise are well muffled. There was a little squeak coming from the top of the driver’s door on our test Highlander.

Technology

When compared to rival automakers, Toyota has lagged in technological innovation. The newest Highlander is a significant improvement over its predecessor, but it is not without flaws. The optional 12.3-inch touchscreen is enormous (the regular screen is 8 inches) and it reacts rapidly to inputs. But the reflections on the surface make it more difficult to use than it should be. We counted five USB ports in the first two rows of our test Highlander Platinum, but there were none in the third row.

When you buy a new Highlander, you get a full suite of cutting-edge driver assistance features at no extra cost. We enjoy the adaptive cruise control but found the lane departure warning to be overly sensitive in the default setting and under-sensitive in the low setting.

Fuel Economy & Value

The EPA predicts a fuel economy of 23 MPG (20 city/27 highway) for the all-wheel-drive Highlander, with front-wheel-drive vehicles getting slightly better mileage at 24 MPG (21 city/29 highway). A difference of only 1 or 2 MPG may not seem like much, but it’s substantial for a car of this type.

The Highlander Hybrid has a combined fuel efficiency rating of 36 MPG, which is something to keep in mind.

In comparison to its main competitors, the Highlander is more costly and comes with fewer basic features. Compared to the best SUVs in this class, the materials utilized inside are just mediocre.

Wildcard

The revised front fascia gives the Highlander a more rugged, work-truck vibe, which is a welcome change. The Supra-inspired character line that follows the outline of the wheels from front to back is not nearly as effective.
